Have you heard of Jen Welter? The other day when I was watching ESPN (yes, it’s true) I heard about this remarkable woman. She was talking about her job as the inside linebackers coach for the National Football League’s Arizona Cardinals during training camp and preseason. In her interview with CNN, she explained that part of her success was that she, “cared as much about them as people as (she) did about them as players, and (she) actually really (knew) football.”

In other words, she did it her way. With heart. With presence and with a passion for the game.

This story inspires me on many levels. Here are a few that come to mind.

  • She dared to break the glass ceiling. Women coaching in the NFL was unheard of. I’m sure many people thought she was crazy, but that didn’t stop her from pursuing her dream. She felt the “fear” and did it anyway.
  • She committed to coaching her way instead of acting like one of the boys. I may be taking some liberties here, but she speaks openly about her more feminine approach to coaching. She honors these players as people – young men with a lot of pressure on them, thrust into the spotlight in a very intense arena. I’m sure her awareness of all that gave her a much needed perspective as she coached these men to tap into their best self.
  • She encouraged players to be leaders. Before each game she would leave hand-written notes to each player, encouraging them individually. This one gesture was something she had wished she had when she was a player. (Yep. She played professional football, too!)

So, what does all this mean to you and me? Quite simply, it means that anything is possible.  Fear and uncertainty drain our energy and zap our personal power. If you have been playing small, no need to waste a millisecond more questioning the past. Forget it. It’s over.
