I’m whisking you away on an awe-inspiring hike in Montana de Oro State Park, right next to the sweeping views of the Pacific Ocean. It was meant to be a family affair to the peak of Valencia, but as you might guess, my teenage sons had other plans. As soon as the trail started, they zoomed ahead, eager to conquer the path on their own terms.
When you have a plan, be prepared to pivot!
There I was, hoping for some quality family time, yet here they were, sprinting towards independence. This got me thinking about the unexpected lessons nature throws our way. Just like the resilient weeds flowering out of sheer rock along our path, sometimes the most profound insights come from the most unexpected places.
The journey itself is a sweet as the destination.
As I meandered at my own pace, the journey taught me a beautiful lesson about time. Life isn’t just about rushing to your destination. It’s about savoring the journey, the breathtaking cliffs, the expansive ocean, and yes, even the freedom of teenagers venturing on their own.
Boundaries are the best teachers of all.
Along the trail, I noticed the poison oak snug against the path—nature’s own boundary marker. It’s a crisp reminder that boundaries are not just necessary; they’re beautiful. They teach us that staying on our path can protect us and the delicate ecological balance around us.
The magic of meandering.
The hike was peppered with switchbacks, making the steep climb more manageable. It dawned on me—this is exactly like chasing a big dream. We often envision a straight, uphill battle to our goals, but life, wisely, has its switchbacks. They allow us to catch our breath, to appreciate the wildflowers, to enjoy the view—and yes, to prepare for the next leg of the ascent.
Keep going. You’ll get there in time!
Reaching near the peak, the real challenge loomed larger, shrouded in clouds. It was intimidating, a bit like looking ahead at a daunting goal. But just like my specks of sons at the summit, it reminded me that with persistence, one step at a time, any summit is reachable.
Let’s face it, we’re all going to face mountains. Whether climbing literal peaks or metaphorical ones, it’s all about embracing each step, each moment, and every little switchback along the way. Let’s climb these mountains together, and find joy in every step of the journey.
