Why Play Matters (And Why I’m Obsessed with Mahjong)

There is something deeply healing about play, and I don’t think we talk about that enough as adults. We speak often about productivity, optimization, healing work, and growth — all worthy pursuits — but rarely do we honor the simple medicine of gathering around a table for no reason other than joy.

One of the core reasons I created Wish Club was to build community anchored in experiences that genuinely uplift our hearts. Not networking. Not performing. Not achieving. Just being together in ways that feel light, connective, and alive.

For me, that feeling has always included games. I’ve loved board games since I was a kid. There’s something beautifully old-fashioned about laughter spilling across a table, snacks within reach, music playing in the background, and the gentle spark of friendly competition. It’s a combination that soothes our stressed minds and quietly opens our hearts. When we play, we soften. We listen. We connect without trying so hard.

Recently, my dear friend Jeanne taught me how to play Chinese Mahjong, and I was instantly hooked. Mahjong is having a resurgence here in the States, but what many people encounter first is American Mahjong — which, while wonderful, can feel a bit like you need an Excel spreadsheet to get started. Chinese Mahjong, on the other hand, is equally engaging yet far more intuitive. Once you understand the rhythm of the tiles, the game begins to flow. It’s strategic, social, and surprisingly approachable.

Because learning something new can feel intimidating, Jeanne generously created a simple how-to video for our community. If you’re curious to play, I encourage you to watch it a few times. It’s not about mastering the game; it’s about feeling comfortable enough to sit down and begin. That’s how community grows — not through perfection, but through participation.

Mahjong Mondays at Wish Club are about more than tiles. They’re about gathering in a way that feels human again. They’re about letting yourself be a beginner, laughing at small mistakes, sharing stories between rounds, and remembering that play is not frivolous — it is essential.

If you’ve been craving connection, if you’ve been wanting something that feels social but not overwhelming, structured yet relaxed, this might be exactly what your heart has been asking for.

You can watch the Mahjong how-to video and reserve your seat for the next Mahjong Monday. And if you’re curious about everything unfolding inside Wish Club — from Wish Circles to sound baths to creative gatherings — I invite you to explore our upcoming events and learn what it means to become a member.
